Preparing for Adulthood (PfA)

At Rushall we aim for all our pupils to reach their full potential and sky rocket into adulthood supported by the highest quality broad, balanced and relevant opportunities to thrive

We recognise Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) should begin as early as possible to support pupils and families to have high aspirations for the future. During the earliest experiences with us in EYFS onwards, we work hard to ensure that our pupils are experiencing a broad and enriched curriculum, building confidence and independence skills which aims to stimulate their interests into the world of work and supports develop the communication skills, resilience and problem solving skills needed for life after Rushall. This builds to incorporate a wide ranging careers programme to guide our pupils through their choices in life alongside parents.

Preparing for adulthood means preparing for:

Secondary school
Higher Education and/or employment
Independent living
Community participation
Good health

Early Years

Early Years pupils will have access to opportunities to develop social , communication and independence skills as a prerequisite to preparation for adulthood and employability skills :

Real world play (kitchens, DIY, cleaning, builder, nurse, doctor)
Making choices—Using visual timetables, symbol exchange and choice boards to help express needs and preferences
Adapting to new environments and routines
Playing alongside and with adults and other children
Awareness of own (and others) feelings
Adult-led supported strategies to manage routine, cope with difficulties and self-regulate
Social stories to help with unfamiliar or challenging situations
Visits into the community

Key Stage 1

In KS1 our provision will increase to include access to preparation for adulthood and employability skills via:

Role play home corner and area provision
Experiencing going out of school and travelling
Real world visits (fire stations, farms etc.)
‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’
Meeting job related role models—visitors to school
Understanding own and others feelings. Strategies to cope and self-regulate
Social skills, sharing toys and friends. Developing friendships, friendship groups, attending clubs at school, developing understanding of boundaries
Developing self regulation skills with support
Resolving upsets with visual and verbal support

Key Stage 2

In KS2 our provision will increase to include access to preparation for adulthood and employability skills by:

Talking about different careers and education options
Giving access to career related role models
Job/Career focus for real world visits
Starting to build a personal profile of interests and ambitions
School sessions from visitors on careers and future aspirations
Internal work experience opportunities—dining hall, library, admin
Taking part in internal enterprise opportunities e.g. Christmas Fayre
